American Leave, Holidays and the Days You Do Not Accrue
Paid time off here is an employer benefit rather than a statutory floor, which makes the leave section of an offer a genuine part of the compensation rather than boilerplate.

Leave in America is largely set by the employer rather than by national law. That single fact explains most of what surprises people arriving from countries with statutory entitlements.
There is no national minimum
Paid annual leave is not guaranteed federally, and the amount offered is a competitive decision by each employer. Professional roles typically offer a meaningful allowance, and many jobs offer very little.
Public holidays are similarly a matter of employer practice for private companies, even where a day is federally recognised. Retail and service employers frequently work through them.
Some states and cities have introduced their own requirements, particularly for sick leave, so the position varies by location and has been changing over time.
How accrual actually works
Leave usually accrues over the year rather than appearing at the start of it, which means a new joiner has very little available for several months.
Many employers cap the balance that can be carried into a new year, and some require unused leave to be forfeited above a threshold. The cap is often what forces a December holiday.
Whether accrued leave is paid out on leaving depends on the employer and on state law, and it is one of the more consequential lines in a resignation.
Unlimited policies are a different mechanism
Policies described as unlimited generally remove accrual entirely, which means there is no balance to carry, cap or pay out on departure.
In practice usage under such policies is governed by team norms rather than by an allowance, and the observed effect is often that people take less rather than more.
For a new arrival with long trips to India in prospect, the absence of a stated entitlement makes it worth establishing what the actual norm is before relying on it.
Sick leave, parental leave and the separate categories
Sick time is frequently a separate bucket from annual leave, with its own accrual and its own rules about documentation for longer absences.
Parental leave is not federally guaranteed as paid time, though job-protected unpaid leave exists in defined circumstances and several states have introduced their own paid programmes.
The detail here varies substantially by state, by employer size and by tenure, and it has changed repeatedly, so the specifics should come from the employer's plan documents.
The long trip home
A three-week trip to India consumes most of a typical American annual allowance in one absence, which is a constraint people do not anticipate before their first year.
Combining leave with public holidays, and with any remote-working flexibility, is how most people manage it. Some employers allow unpaid leave for exactly this reason.
Raising it early rather than at the point of booking gives a manager time to plan around it, and it is a conversation American managers are used to having.
Questions readers ask
Does at-will employment mean I can be dismissed with no reason given?
In many situations an employer need not give a reason, subject to laws protecting against certain grounds and to whatever the contract says. Whether a particular dismissal was lawful is a matter for an employment lawyer.
Should I sign a severance agreement immediately?
These agreements typically waive rights, and there are often review periods attached. Having a lawyer read it before signing is a proportionate step given what is being given up.
