Address Changes and the Records That Must Follow You
Moving inside America means updating a long list of separate records, some of which carry legal obligations and deadlines rather than merely determining where post arrives.

Changing address here is not one action. It is a set of separate notifications to bodies that do not share information with one another.
Postal forwarding is a courtesy, not a record change
The postal service will redirect mail for a period once you file a change of address, and it may pass the new address to some senders. That is a convenience, not a record update.
Forwarding expires, and mail sent afterwards is returned rather than delivered. Anything that has not been updated at the source by then simply stops reaching you.
Some categories of mail are not forwarded at all, and official correspondence is disproportionately represented in that group, which is exactly the mail you cannot afford to miss.
Some updates carry legal obligations
Non-citizens generally have reporting obligations regarding their address, and those obligations come with defined deadlines rather than being advisory.
The precise requirement depends on status and category, and the rules have been amended over time, so the position should be confirmed against the relevant agency's current guidance or with an attorney.
Driving licences and vehicle registration also carry statutory update requirements in most states, again with a defined window, and again enforced through the record rather than through a reminder.
The financial and insurance records
Banks, card issuers and lenders use the address for verification as well as for post, so an outdated one can cause transactions to be declined or an application to fail.
Insurance is the case where the address changes the product itself. Motor and property premiums are priced on location, and an unreported move can affect a claim.
Employers hold the address for payroll and for year-end tax documents, and those documents arrive months after the fact, by which time an old address has long stopped forwarding.
Moving between states multiplies the work
A state boundary resets the licence, the vehicle registration, the voter registration where applicable, and the insurance policy, each with its own deadline after establishing residence.
State tax filing can also be affected, since a year split across two states may require returns in both. This is a matter for a preparer rather than for guesswork.
Professional licences are issued by states and generally do not transfer automatically, which is a significant consideration for anybody in a regulated occupation.
Making the list once
The efficient method is to keep a running list of every organisation holding your address, added to as each account is opened rather than reconstructed at the point of moving.
Working through it in a single sitting after a move takes an evening. Discovering the entries one missed letter at a time takes a year and costs more.
Ordering the list by consequence puts immigration reporting, licences and insurance first, and subscriptions last, which is the order in which delay actually matters.
Questions readers ask
Do all family members' statuses change together?
Not necessarily. Positions held on different bases can change independently. What applies to your household depends on the specific documents, which is why professional review matters.
Should each person really have a separate file?
Yes. Requests almost always concern one individual, and a combined folder means searching through everybody's papers under time pressure.
