Laundry, Dishwashers and Appliances That Work Differently Here
American household machines are larger, hotter and built around different assumptions than Indian ones, and the mismatch shows up as ruined clothes before it shows up as understanding.

An American kitchen and laundry room contain familiar machines that behave unfamiliarly. The differences are small individually and produce a run of avoidable damage in the first month.
Washers assume a dryer follows
Laundry here is designed as a two-machine process. The washer is not expected to leave clothes ready to hang, because almost every household owns a tumble dryer and uses it for everything.
That assumption changes the settings. Spin speeds and cycle choices are built around handing wet clothes to a dryer, not around drying on a line or a balcony rail.
Line drying outdoors is also restricted in many rented buildings and some residential associations, on appearance grounds. Indoor drying racks are the usual workaround and they are widely sold.
The dryer is where clothes are actually damaged
Heat settings run hotter than most new arrivals expect. Cotton shrinks, synthetics distort and anything delicate is ruined in a single cycle at the default setting.
Indian clothing suffers particularly. Fine cottons, embroidery and anything with metallic thread should be air dried, and the safest habit is to sort those items out before the load goes in.
Lint filters must be cleared between loads. A blocked filter makes the machine ineffective and is a genuine fire risk, which is why the reminder appears on the machine itself.
Shared and coin laundry
Many apartment buildings provide a shared laundry room rather than in-unit machines. These run on cards or applications, and capacity is the constraint at weekends.
Buildings usually post rules about removing finished loads promptly. Leaving washing in a machine is one of the more reliable ways to annoy neighbours you have not yet met.
In-unit laundry commands a meaningful rent premium, and whether it is worth paying depends mostly on household size. It is one of the few amenities that changes daily life noticeably.
Dishwashers are used differently from how you expect
American dishwashers are designed for dishes that have been scraped but not washed. Rinsing everything first, which is the instinct of most new arrivals, actually reduces cleaning performance on some machines.
Detergent type matters more than quantity, and rinse aid affects drying rather than cleaning. Heavily spiced or oily cookware often needs a heavy cycle rather than a longer soak.
Some Indian cookware does not belong in the machine at all. Cast iron, carbon steel and anything with a seasoned surface loses that surface in one wash.
Power, plugs and the machines you brought
Household voltage is lower than in India, and frequency differs too. Appliances brought from home will not work correctly on a simple plug adaptor and can be damaged outright.
Motors and heating elements are the worst affected. Mixers, grinders and kettles are the common casualties, and a transformer heavy enough to run them costs more than replacing the appliance.
The practical conclusion is to bring the things that are hard to buy here and expect to replace anything that plugs in. Indian-brand kitchen appliances made for local voltage are widely available.
Questions readers ask
What do people most underestimate about owning a car here?
Depreciation and unscheduled repairs. Both are large and neither arrives as a monthly bill, which is why they are missing from most people's mental arithmetic.
Should I buy new or used?
New cars lose value fastest in the early years, while used ones carry more repair uncertainty. A well-maintained vehicle a few years old is the common compromise, and reliability records matter more than age.
